What is Semaglutide?
Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Wegovy™ and Ozempic™. It is a GLP-1 (Glucagon-like peptide-1) agonist, meaning it mimics the function of the body’s GLP-1 hormone.
GLP-1 is made in the gut and has the following actions:
- Increases insulin production, which decreases blood sugar.
- Blocks glucagon (a hormone with the opposite effect of insulin, which increases blood sugar).
- Increases gastric emptying time, slowing down food transit, keeping you full longer, and reducing sugar and insulin spikes.
- Signals the brain that you are no longer hungry.
What is Tirzepatide?
Tirzepatide is the active ingredient in Zepbound™ and Mounjaro™. It is also a GLP-1 agonist like Semaglutide and functions similarly.
The difference between the two medications is that Tirzepatide is also a GIP agonist (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide), targeting two hormones and having an additive effect.

Semaglutide vs. Tirzepatide: Which one is right for me?
These medications are very similar. Tirzepatide is generally better tolerated and leads to greater weight loss compared to Semaglutide.
From JAMA:
"In this large, propensity-matched cohort study, individuals with overweight or obesity treated with Tirzepatide were significantly more likely to achieve clinically meaningful weight loss and larger reductions in body weight compared with those treated with Semaglutide." – July 8, 2024
