What is a chemical peel?

Chemical peel is a technique used to improve the appearance of the skin. It can be applied anywhere on the body including the face, neck, hands or duclute. A chemical solution is applied to the skin that causes it to exfoliate and eventually peel off. The new, regenerated skin is usually smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin. The new skin is also temporarily more sensitive to the sun, so the use of sunscreen and avoidance of long sun exposure is required.

What are peels good for?

  1. Hyper-pigmentation conditions such as melasma or sun damage.
  2. Fine wrinkles
  3. Mild to moderate scars, including acne scars
  4. Stimulating collagen production which leads to firmer, more youthful skin.
  5. Reduction of pores size

Are these peels safe for all skin types?

Yes

When does peeling begin and how long does it last?

This can vary from person to person but generally these peels last 7 days. Peeling starts on the number 2-3 and will continue for another 3-4 days. For some this can take up to 10-14 days.

How to prepare for chemical peel?

No major preparation is needed. You must NOT use any home creams/lotions on the treated area 2-3 days prior to the peel, especially if creams/lotions have expoliateing ingredients such as Retin-A, Retinoids, Glycolic acids…

How many peels do I need and how often can I get it?

Although it is possible to get desired results after one peel, it is recommended at the very least to get a series of 3 peels, 4-6 weeks apart.

What are potential complications?

Complications rate for either peel are relatively low due to the fact that these peels use different agents but all are in low concentration. Most notable (but still rare) complication is Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation which is seen mostly on individuals with darker skin color. When the peel is applied, the skin become sensitive and more prone to damaging rays of the sun. This sensitivity can stimulate the melanocytes (cells that give pigment) and result in dark spots. The anti-itch cream and sun screen provided with the peel, greatly reduces the chances of this complication.

Can I use make up after the peel?

You must wait at least 4-6 hour to put the makeup on depending on the peel. In general, it’s better to avoid the makeup for 24 hours.
